Interview de MCL "déspoilérisée" :

411mania Interviews: Mark Christopher Lawrence

http://www.411mania.com/siteimages/marcus%20christopher%20lawrence%20-%20big%20al%20on%20chuck_51177.jpg

Big Mike of TV's Chuck speaks with 411mania.com for an exclusive interview.

The NBC series Chuck has been letting it fly in it's third season and continuing to be absolutely awesome. And Big Mike, the general manager of the show's Buy More store where the title character and hero works, was in attendance at this year's Anaheim Comic Con at the Anaheim Convention Center. Big Mike's Mark Christopher Lawrence has been a recurring presence in film and TV for the better part of over 25 years having appeared in Terminator 2, K-PAX, The Pursuit of Happyness, and Halloween II (2009). Big Mike has remains oblivious to Chuck's secret spy life this season, but the hilarity he brings to the show is as strong as ever. During the convention, Lawrence we caught up with Lawrence for an exclusive interview:

Jeffrey Harris: How are you doing today?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: I'm doing great, how are you?

Jeffrey Harris: Still breathing, thank you for asking. Do you like to go to these conventions a lot to meet and greet with the fans?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: This is actually my first one where I'm actually in a booth on the floor. It's fun. It's nice to see people and talk to them about your work. It's good.

Jeffrey Harris: How excited were you to come back to play Big Mike for Chuck's third season? Was there any question at all because some characters were written out?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: There was no question. I knew I was coming back.

Jeffrey Harris: It's been a lot of fun seeing you interact more with Casey (Adam Baldwin). How did you like that storyline?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: It was nice because he's so intense that he made it really funny.

(...)

Jeffrey Harris: Do you have a favorite sandwich now having worked on the show?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: My personal favorite is just – I'm a simple guy with simple needs, tuna, mayo, mustard, pickles.

Jeffrey Harris: Does working on the show give you like a free Subway sandwich card anytime you got a craving for a Subway sandwich?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: No, but it should *Laughs* . . . That'd be good. There's one about 3 blocks from my house.

Jeffrey Harris: Over the series, the Big Mike and Morgan relationship has gotten to where Big Mike sort of sees Morgan as a son and Morgan at times looks to Big Mike as a father figure for advice. How do you like the way the relationship between Mike and Morgan has grown over the course of the series?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: I really like it. He's one of the actors that I really enjoy working. I think that character dynamic is very interesting and very rewarding. As an actor you want to work with someone that's giving and Josh [Gomez, who plays Morgan Grimes] is that way. It makes our stuff really funny together.

(...)

Jeffrey Harris: Any word on a 4th season? Do you think a 4th season will happen?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: There's no word on it. I think there's definitely an opportunity. We all enjoy doing the show. The show's fans enjoy the show. The numbers indicate that it's a matter of what the network wants to do, and I can't really second-guess the network.

Jeffrey Harris: If the show does come back and your character is still alive, do you want to come back?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: Oh absolutely.

Jeffrey Harris: Do you have a favorite scene you've played yet?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: I think my favorite scene was from season 1, the last episode of season 1 where the Buy More is totally looted, the fish is missing, and I think Big Mike's line, "Here's my fish!" was one of my favorites.

Jeffrey Harris: How did you get into acting?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: I studied theatre at USC in college and I did one play in high school and one play in summer stock after high school and sort of got bitten by the bug and decided to go for it.

Jeffrey Harris: Is there anything else you're working on right now you can tell us about?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: Right now I'm writing with some writing partners, we're writing a feature film, and we're right in the middle of that process . . . So we're just working on a project right now. We have a couple that are completed scripts that are ready to go. So we're just trying to position ourselves to when we get one done, we get the door open to get those other scripts through, and just start doing stuff that we want to do.

Jeffrey Harris: How do you like writing?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: I love writing. As a stand-up comic, I write everyday.

Jeffrey Harris: What advice do you have for aspiring performers?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: Be prepared. Be prepared as you can be. That's the thing that helps you.

Jeffrey Harris: Who is your favorite babe on Chuck?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: Hmm, of the series regulars, I'd have to say Yvonne [Strahovski as Sarah] and Sarah [Lancaster as Ellie]. And of all the guest stars so far, Katrina Law.

Jeffrey Harris: Anything you'd like to say to the fans and loyal viewers of Chuck out there?

Mark Christopher Lawrence: I just want to say to the fans and loyal viewers, thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart for really helping push us over the top to get us back this season and I look forward to entertaining you for the years to come.

Jeffrey Harris: Thank you so much for your time.

Mark Christopher Lawrence: Thank you sir.

Mark Christopher Lawrence currently serves as Vice-President of MOXIE Theatre of Encinitas and formerly served as San Diego’s local branch President of the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists, as well as, Vice-President of San Diego’s local branch of the Screen Actor’s Guild, where he was selected by the AFTRA National Board President to serve on the joint SAG/AFTRA Primetime Network Code Negotiating Committee. UCSD’s Thurgood Marshall College has embraced Mark as Associate Guest Artist In Residence and he has partnered with them in bringing awareness to the newly launched African-American Studies Minor at Thurgood Marshall College.
Mark Christopher Lawrence is one of Hollywood’s most sought after character actors. In addition to displaying a variety of theatrical skills, this diverse actor also excels as a producer, a vocalist, a comedian, and a literary scholar. To the tribute of his memorable charm and hilarious wit, Lawrence continues to meet the demands, and overcome challenges in the world of entertainment. Best known for his role of Mix Master Tone Def, in the cult classic Fear of a Black Hat, Lawrence utilized his creative talents as a character actor and besieged audiences in this comical spoof based on This is Spinal Tap, about a Gangsta Rap group named N.W.H.
As a native of Compton, California, Lawrence and his two siblings were raised in a neighborhood submerged in incessant crime and corruption. In spite of this, his single mother grounded him with a strong sense of values and self worth, resulting in a young Lawrence evading violent street life and discovering other ways to entertain himself. An innate and unrefined talent of imitating and mimicking neighborhood companions, coupled with his astonishing ability to adopt mannerisms and develop characters, Lawrence was able to remain on the correct path and away from crime. “I lived in an area that within two blocks in any direction, there was major gang activity. It could have really been easy for me to go in that direction but it was my mother’s upbringing and some guidance from William, our neighbor, and an interest taken in me by my tenth grade English teacher, Mrs. Schilling, that kept me on the straight and narrow.” Aware of his intelligence and budding oral communication skills, Lawrence’s teacher, Mrs. Shilling, enrolled him in his high school’s debate team. Soon, Lawrence found himself immersed in forensic speaking competition, involved in both humorous and dramatic interpretation of literature, prose, poetry, and theatrical literature. After winning the school district’s Literary Olympiad competition, Lawrence went on to compete on the state and national levels, eventually winning the collegiate Bovero-Tabor Award, an accolade reserved for the top Jr. College speaker in the country. Subsequently, after gaining attention from University of Southern California’s debate team coaches, he was awarded a full scholarship to attend the University. While a student, Lawrence traveled the nation competing in tournaments for USC in individual events. His forte included prose, poetry, theatrical and duo interpretation of literature, and speech to entertain, which ultimately became his springboard into stand-up comedy. Furthermore, he sharpened his craft by working professionally with the critically acclaimed Los Angeles Theater Center. Eventually, a Hollywood talent agent noticed his skill, and Lawrence quickly acquired his first job in television, a role on Hill Street Blues. After graduation, he continued to work steadily. He worked with the San Francisco Mime Troupe and performed standup comedy throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, and Guam, often opening for major acts, such as Jerry Seinfeld and Rodney Dangerfield. Additionally, Lawrence has performed in a dozen plays and won a Dramalogue Award for his performance in Reza Abdoh’s, Minimanta. For his role in Glass House (Ken Davis), Lawrence won an NAACP award and soon after gained the attention of film director, James Cameron, who had cast him as the insane asylum "Burly Attendant" in the action-thriller, Terminator II. Impressed by his comedic abilities, Cameron extended Lawrence’s two days of work into several weeks of production; hence, the beginning of Lawrence’s flourishing career.
Deriding from the hip-hop culture of today, “Mix Master Tone-Def” in Fear of a Black Hat was the role that landed Lawrence instant fame and credibility as a Hollywood notable. This role, coupled with Hip-Hop’s immense commercial success, has expanded this film’s fan culture to worldwide; thus, making Lawrence a distinctive cult icon. Thereafter, this constant entertainer continued to depict a variety of comedic and dramatic characters in feature films: The Pursuit of Happyness (starring Will Smith), The Island, Lost Treasure, Crimson Tide, K-Pax, Tales From the Hood, Planet of the Apes, That Darn Cat, and Fair Game. His small screen credits include: Life Is Ruff, Reba, Seinfeld, Hot Properties, Coach, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Touched by an Angel, Malcolm in the Middle, and Dharma and Greg. He was a series regular on The George Wendt Show and The Mullets where he portrayed “Bill,” the next-door neighbor. Lawrence also starred in the Disney movie of the week Life is Ruff and the CBS mini-series Shake, Rattle and Roll, portraying an astounding depiction of “Fats Domino.” In the near future, Lawrence can be seen in the feature film The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will Smith and as the host of SHOUT! An Evening of Gospel Comedy.
As an entrepreneur, Lawrence, along with partners Barry Shabaka Henley and Tarabu Betserai Kirkland, formed the Black Theater Artist’s Workshop. Originally, an alliance with The Los Angeles Theater Center, the workshop became its own entity after the closing of LATC. Today, all three partners work together creating various theater and film projects. Currently, they are shopping several completed scripts for film and television. A well-rounded businessman, Mark Christopher Lawrence has also launched his own company, Prayer Dudz, Which has just completed post-production on the first of a series of Gospel Comedy DVD’s entitled SHOUT! SHOUT features up and coming comedians and musicians and singers, as well as, seasoned professionals. Prayer Dudz is also the catalyst for Lawrence’s clothing line, a casual and dressy line of men’s apparel. Additionally, Lawrence participates, supports, and contributes to various charities. His sincere concern for the affected, and appreciation for the Blessings he has been afforded is exhibited through his involvement with several organizations, primarily those that assist children, diabetics, and breast cancer patients. Personally, Lawrence has an avid interest in golf, baseball, football, PBR, and billiards. He is also a gourmet chef with international culinary skills.
Though he is known for his clever characters, Lawrence’s true talent is his genuine ability to make others laugh and his genuine love for people and their well being. Additionally, he enjoys stimulating awareness for social, political and economical situations through comedy. His humorous, yet frank views on life keep Lawrence’s motivation and creative energy overflowing. Lawrence, the actor, is highly memorable, and Lawrence, the man, is highly enlightening. This exceptional combination makes Mark Christopher Lawrence, a truly respected and gifted individual, a standout in Hollywood.

Re: Mark Christopher Lawrence / Big Mike

Interview non spoilerisante de MCL sur "Chuck" par IF Magazine :

Exclusive Interview: MARK CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE WATCHES THE STORE ON 'CHUCK'

The actor who plays Big Mike talks about playing the Buy More manager and what might happen if the character ever mellowed out

As manager of the Burbank Buy More electronics store on CHUCK, Big Mike, played by Mark Christopher Lawrence, has been through his share of harrowing experiences. There have been weird store invasions (which might make more sense to Big Mike if he knew that workers Chuck Bartowski and John Casey are really spies), employees secretly using the premises for unprofessional purposes, the treachery of assistant manager Emmett Milbarge (Tony Hale) that got Big Mike fired for awhile and the sudden death of Emmett that brought Big Mike back.

Lawrence says he’s enjoyed it all, except for those developments that sent Big Mike off-screen for extended periods of time. NBC has now announced it has renewed CHUCK for a fourth season (and tonight, the two-hour season finale airs).

Lawrence of course can’t talk about what will be happening in the future – with the pick-up just announced, the actors can’t say what their characters will be doing when we see them in the fall – but, standing in the middle of the Buy More store set, he’s happy to talk about what’s happened so far.

iF MAGAZINE: Were you sorry or happy or somewhat both when Emmett went away in the manner that he did?

MARK CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE: Well, as a fellow actor, it was very sad, because [Tony Hale] is a very funny guy. It was a lot of fun to work with him. And then part of me is like, well, it gives me a little more screen time. So it’s a little bit ambiguous.

iF: Big Mike has had a new look since he’s returned to the Buy More. Do you like it?

LAWRENCE: I love Big Mike’s new look. Clearly, his tie and shirt choices are a little different from mine [laughs].

iF: When you started on the show, did you realize it had the potential to last so long and to get this kind of love from fans?

LAWRENCE: Not until about halfway into the first season. I thought, “Wow, this show has legs.” I wasn’t a series regular then, and so we cut a deal [to make Lawrence a regular] midseason and here we are.

iF: Some of your fellow CHUCK actors appeared in car commercials earlier this year that were designed to look like they were part of the episodes. Would you be up for doing something like that?

LAWRENCE: Possibly. Before I got this show, before the 2000 commercial strike, I did a lot of commercials, so it would be an easy transition. I’ve eaten two Subway sandwiches on the show, but it was actually part of the episode.

iF: Were you surprised by the development of the romance between Big Mike and the mother [Patricia Rae] of Buy More employee Morgan Grimes [series regular Joshua Gomez]?

LAWRENCE: No. One of the writers had mentioned it and then it came up at Comic-Con, and then when it happened, it was funny [laughs].

iF: Big Mike has shown the capacity to change his mood on a dime. Do you enjoy that aspect of the character?

LAWRENCE: Yeah. In a way, the farther away from me it is, the more fun it is to do. The whole Big Mike character is so far from me that it’s a lot of fun.

iF: Would working at a Buy More drive you insane in real life?

LAWRENCE: In real life, I don’t think I’d be able to do it. Film at eleven [laughs].

iF: Do you have a favorite aspect of playing Big Mike?

LAWRENCE: I think in real life, I’m so nice all the time that to play the surliness of Big Mike is probably the most fun for me, because it’s a big stretch for me.

iF: Are there items on the Buy More set that make you go, “Ah, I must get one of those for real”?

LAWRENCE: Well, the first thing was, when we came in here, it was the big flat screens, I thought, “Okay, I’ve got to get a bigger flat screen. My flat screen’s way too small.” So I bought one of those. Now it’s games. I’m looking at some of the games that come out that end up on the screen sometimes. I say, “I don’t have that, that looks like fun.” Because I’ll play one and the next thing you know, I’m at the store, getting it.

iF: Do you have a favorite part of the Buy More set?

LAWRENCE: Big Mike’s office.

iF: Were you sad when they broke Big Mike’s mounted swordfish?

LAWRENCE: No, I wasn’t sad [laughs]. I was more sad in the episode where I was supposed to go fishing. There was a break-in at the Buy More and I didn’t actually get to the pond. So that kind of bummed me out, but there was a silver lining to the cloud, in that I was able to knock the guy from Fulcrum out.

iF: Do you like it when there is spy craziness going on in the Buy More, or do you prefer the scenes where there’s just Buy More craziness going on?

LAWRENCE: I like the [spy] stuff in there when I’m involved in it, because it ups Big Mike’s fan quotient. People like to see Big Mike get into the mix.

iF: Last season, Big Mike and some of his fellow Buy More workers got involved in a revenge prank against another Buy More outlet that contained a gag where row after row of shelves got knocked over. Do you have fun when they do things like that?

LAWRENCE: Sometimes the gags are fun. That particular stunt worked great in the rehearsal and never worked again.

iF: If the gag didn’t work the way it was supposed to, what are we seeing in the televised version?

LAWRENCE: Probably various takes [cut together], because it didn’t work the way it was supposed to work [in a single take].

iF: Are you involved in any other projects that you did on hiatus?

LAWRENCE: SILVERLAKE VIDEO is a low-budget film that I did with Patricia Rae and Scott Krinsky [who plays Jeff on CHUCK] and Patricia’s real-life boyfriend and I also I shot my second gospel comedy DVD.

iF: Do you sing also?

LAWRENCE: I do sing. Well, in the DVD I’m not singing, because we didn’t license the music. We sang in the live show, but when we cut the DVD together, it’s just the comedy.

iF: So this is a video of a live stage show?

LAWRENCE: Of stand-up. [It’s called] SHOUTS: THE SECOND COMING. It’s the second tour [laughs].

iF: Did you enjoy Comic-Con last year?

LAWRENCE: The rock star experience was great. It was really funny to watch Vik [Sahay, who plays Lester] and Scott do their thing [as the cover band Jeffster] in front of a huge audience, because we’d seen it on set and it’s just not the same. People were screaming. It was great. It was like, “Boy, I know rock stars!” [laughs]

iF: But presumably when you guys all came out on stage, everybody was yelling like you were all rock stars.

LAWRENCE: People were going nuts, yeah. “We love you, Big Mike!” It was great, a lot of fun.

iF: Is there any special type of scene you’d like to see for Big Mike?

LAWRENCE: You know, I don’t really think in terms of what I’d like to see. I’d like to see what the writers come up with and see where I can take it. CHUCK I think is one of the highlights of my career.

iF: Do you think Big Mike might ever mellow out substantially, or would that kill him?

LAWRENCE: I think if Big Mike mellows too much, he’s probably dead.

Re: Mark Christopher Lawrence / Big Mike

Interview de MCL par "Tightrope" :

A look at a dynamic actor

You know him as Big Mike on NBC’s current hit dramedy Chuck.   You know him as a standup comedian and brilliant character actor.  Here is a look at an actor’s career that has spanned over twenty years and several genres of performance, and a rare look at the man behind the scenes and off stage.  He can take a few minutes of screen time and make memorable magic. I’m certain you know the face, if not the name.  Meet Mark Christopher Lawrence: actor, comic, humanitarian, music and food connoisseur.

TR: How did you get started in stand up in high school?

MCL: My best friend, he was like a big brother to me, sort of talked me into it, and he and I wrote an act together.  The first time I performed, it was he and I together.

TR: How did he coerce you?

MCL: Just scared me.  I mean I am very competitive.

TR: Did the performance ever become a solo act?

MCL: Yeah. We performed together for about a year together and then I went to college. He stopped doing comedy.  And then I started doing it (comedy) again.

How did being involved in debate, while in high school, prepare you for the stage?

It (debate) really knocked out all my inhibition.  In speech and debate, I competed in what they call individual events- mainly persuasive, informative and oral interpretation of literature.  The interpretation of literature really lends itself to acting.

TR: What prompted the switch from communications major to fine arts major at University of Southern California (USC)?

MCL: I took a voice class for speaking and centering, to keep my voice dynamic.  The instructor said to me, ‘You can’t pass this class without doing two songs and two monologues.’  When I did the two songs and two monologues he talked me into auditioning for the bachelor of fine arts acting program at USC.

TR: What was that change like?

MCL: The change was difficult.  First of all they take fifteen men and fifteen women a year and they stick with each other for all four years.  I was a junior at the time I was accepted into the program.  They had three open slots so myself, Tommy Ford, and this young lady,   Sabrina Weber ended up in those open slots.  They put me in as a sophomore into the program, but I was already a junior by virtue of the number of credits I had.   I also started working professionally the same year in Los Angeles Theatre Center, also in television on Hill Street Blues, which was my first audition and first job that same year.

It was difficult because all of a sudden I went from being a communications major to being on a performance track.  It was learning something new, really learning how to act, techniques and all that.  That first year was definitely a struggle just learning terminology and all that kind of stuff.  But clearly I was a natural on stage. Once I had gotten to the point where I was comfortable with technique, it was easy to apply it to what I was already doing (acting).  My instincts are great.   It was easy to apply technique to my instinct.

TR: Was Hill Street Blues a highlight during the year you changed majors?

That’s the style.  When you take the largeness of commedia and bring it back and hit the subtleties, it really enhances your comic ability.  I remember the director kept telling me, ‘Mark it’s got to be bigger.’ It just wasn’t clicking for me.   Finally, opening day in Dolores Park in San Francisco, three thousand people were in the park to see the show and it just clicked. I was like, ‘Oh that guy way back there has to see it’. I came out on stage and did a double take and this actress who was working with me, named Andrea, goes, ‘Aha! You got it!’

TR: Tell me about your involvement with Thurgood Marshall College.

MCL: The University of California at San Diego’s (UCSD) entire campus is comprised of mainly Asian students.  I would say upwards of 80%.  African-American students make up less than 1%.  For years there had been a move to get, at the very least, an African Studies minor on campus.  Allan Havis, who is the Provost at Thurgood Marshall College, approached me about doing an artist-in-residency at the college the first year that they planned the African Studies minor.  So that year I did several things for them: I produced a ‘Conscious Comedy’ night, produced a Blaxploitation Film Series and brought in directors from some of those films,  and I performed a staged  reading of a one-man show called Robeson, about the life  and experiences of Paul Robeson.  All those events were set up to try and draw awareness to this new program on campus. At the luncheon to launch the African Studies minor, the Vice President of the University (UCSD) said something to the effect of, ‘We’ll look at the numbers at the end of the year and see if it makes sense to continue the program’.  I sat there thinking to myself, even if every single African-American student that comprised the less  than  1% enrolled at UCSD signed up for the African Studies minor, the ‘numbers’ are not going to make sense.  I thought, you just have to be committed to supporting this program.  Then this young student was channeling my thoughts and she stood and said almost verbatim what I had just thought to myself.  I was glad that it came from a student because clearly as an educator you have a responsibility to listen to what students are telling you.  I think the program is in its fourth year now.  They bring in a new artist-in-residence every year.  Every year since the beginning, my involvement that carries over from my artist-in-residency is producing and hosting the Conscious Comedy show every year.

TR: What is it like auditioning for one part, being cast in another part, and being part of a successful TV series like Chuck?

MCL: First and foremost it is a blessing to be working in this economic climate.  I know so many actors that are fabulous that are just sitting around.  Then sometimes it can be frustrating because you want to do more, it’s not my show (Big Mike).  The show is about Chuck, it’s not really about Big Mike.  So clearly, I’d like to see me more  and I think that people who follow the show (feel the same way)., I get hits on Twitter and Facebook all the time saying ,’ We wish you were on more because every time you  are on, it makes us laugh.’ Clearly, I’d like to do more on the show, but it is what it is.

Some say that success happens when preparation meets opportunity. Do you believe that?

If you are not prepared, you will not work.  That is what I believe.

TR: How do you think this applies to acting in general and your career in particular?

MCL: In general, I talk to students all the time.  I visit students from elementary school to college level and talk to them and say look, if you are an aspiring actor and you get this audition and you go into the room and you are not prepared and you see me sitting there, you will not get a job.  If you and I are up for the same part, know that I am prepared every time.

TR: By preparation, what do you mean?

MCL: I mean I know the character, I know the scene, and I am ready to go to work that day.

TR: Does that mean you memorize the sides?

MCL: I don’t really memorize the sides. With television, it sort of jumps into your head anyway. But even if I have memorized it, I always hold it (the script) because I don’t want them to think that this is the best it can get. I don’t want them thinking this (the audition) Is my performance.

It sounds like you enjoy what you do, not just the longevity, but the day to day of being a performer.

I love being an actor.  I love being on stage.  I love being in front of a camera.  I love doing voice work.  I can’t imagine doing anything else.

TR: Rank the different genres of performance for me, starting with your most favorite.

MCL: Theater. Stand up. Film. Voice over.TV

TR: What would you say your keys are to having longevity as a performer in a business littered with cautionary tales and one act wonders?

MCL: I think you have to approach show business as a business.  You cannot rely on others to do things for you.  You have to find your own work as well.  You have to be prepared.  You have to be able to go in and do a great job and not be a jacka**.  If you go to work and no one likes you, you are not going to work with these people again. I think over my career, I don’t remember ever working with someone that didn’t like me.   You tend to work with a lot of people over and over again.  For example,  from my voice over work for the Adventures in Odyssey, one of the producers  from that has hired me three times already for other projects. It’s the same thing in TV and film.  You go in and you see a director that you have worked with before and they like you and you know they like you, you know you have a job.  Then you relax and let your preparation take over.

TR: So you are saying that preparation and professionalism have kept you going strong in this business?

MCL: I’m nice to everyone I come across.  I try to treat everyone the same. Just because you are a PA (production assistant) does that mean you deserve less respect than a producer or director? A guy that was a production assistant on Hill Street Blues, about eight years later, had become a producer and hired me to work on a TV show.  You never know who you are going to run into.

TR: What is on your iPod?  What is your favorite song right now?

MCL: I have very eclectic taste in music.   I listen to Sam Cooke every day. I love Sam Cooke.  My favorite song right now is “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone.

TR: What is on your nightstand? Read any good books lately?

MCL: On my nightstand, I have the complete works of William Shakespeare. I read aloud something out of that every night.  I also have a script someone sent me and my Bible.

TR: I hear you love to cook. Is that true?

MCL: Yeah I can cook.  I spent so many of the early years in my career working in restaurants, that some of it brushed off on me.  My mother was a fantastic cook.  I can go into a restaurant, order something, taste it, and go home and figure it out.  The first time I figured out I could do that was when I went out once somewhere on Wilshire and had a bowl of white chili for $14 dollars.  The next day, I went to the store got all the ingredients I thought were in it, added a few things, and bought two bottles of wine for $18.

TR: Which is your favorite US regional cuisine?

MCL: It has to be Cajun/Creole from Louisiana.  Both my parents are from Louisiana.  I love gumbo and all that stuff down there that is currently being destroyed in the ocean.

TR:  Which is your favorite international cuisine?

MCL: Italian.  Jamaican. Thai.  That’s a really hard question.

TR: To borrow from James Lipton and his Actor’s Studio interviews, if there is a heaven, what do you want God to say to you when you get to the pearly gates?

MCL: I want God to say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”  That question always chokes me up a little because I think about the way I try to live my life. I try to help people.  I feel like I’m so helpless sometimes in my ability to do things because of being sort of near celebrity; people know my face but don’t really know my name. If I was financially in a different place, I could do more.  I just returned from San Antonio, TX. I visited Fort Sam Houston Army Base.  I visited the wounded warriors at the Center for the Intrepid.  I spent a whole day there.  Then the next day, I visited with their families on the base and did some autograph signing. They were so grateful that somebody came out.  When Denzel (Washington) went there he whipped out his checkbook.  His contribution built two of the houses that they put the families up in when they come to visit their wounded. Part of me wishes I could do that; write a check for a couple hundred thousand.  But I’m not in that position right now.

TR: But you are doing what you can.

MCL: I am.  I am doing what I can. When I went to visit the soldiers, I met this one young man about twenty-two or twenty-three years old who had been burnt in a fire.  He had lost his legs, one arm, the hand on his good arm, his sight, and something had hit him in the head and a piece of his skull was missing.  He was so upbeat, positive, and funny.  At one point he said to me, ‘Mr. Lawrence, you are very quiet.’ I said, ‘I’m just drinking you in. I feel like I want to tell you that God is saying to you when you leave here, you need to go out and tell your story because you are going to change people’s lives.’ I left there truly transformed.  After seeing him and some of the other wounded warriors, I thought that whatever I think my problems are they are not earth-shattering or life-changing.  Sometimes we get so wrapped up in us that we don’t see that we really don’t have problems.

TR: I thank you kindly for your time.

MCL: Thank you.  It has been a real pleasure.

Mark Christopher Lawrence is a modern-day Renaissance man, one to watch.  His preparation and human decency have kept him relevant and working in a business that is often fickle and unkind.  Keep your eyes peeled for a comedy tour during the fall of 2010 that will feature Mark.  The tour is scheduled to hit New York, Los Angeles and a few points in between.

Re: Mark Christopher Lawrence / Big Mike

Interview de MCL par "The Daily Intersect" datant du 14 février :

Interview with Mark Christopher Lawrence

Today, The Daily Intersect got an interview with Mark Christopher Lawrence, an accomplished actor. Most of you know him from his role on the NBC series, Chuck, where he portrays the store’s lovable assistant manager, Big Mike. You may know him from such films as Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Planet of the Apes, and The Pursuit of Happyness. He’s probably best known for his role in the 1994 satirical mockumentary, Fear of a Black Hat. We talked with Mr. Lawrence and asked him a few questions.

Daily Intersect: So, how did you get your start in show business?
Mark Christopher Lawrence: Although my love for theater started in High School, it wasn’t until college (USC) that I made an actual choice to pursue acting as a career. My first professional stage acting job were the roles of Alexis/Diomedes in Antony and Cleopatra at the Los Angeles Theater Center in 1985. My First TV job was that same year on an episode of Hill St. Blues and the following year I was cast in my first film Caddy Shack 2.

DI: What made you want to become an actor?
MCL: I was bitten by the acting bug in High School and tried to avoid acting as a career, but destiny would not be ignored.

DI: How did you get to where you are today?
MCL: An old cliche would say that I got here with “Hard Work”, but I have to add in a lot of luck and blessings from God!

DI: We all know our favorite NSA agent, Adam Baldwin, loves speaking out about issues he feels strongly about. What are some issues that you feel passionately about?
MCL: I don’t know that issues hold my passion as much as causes like Autism, Heart Disease, Cancer, Homelessness and myriad of issues that our troops and their families face on a daily basis.

DI: What’s the best part about working on Chuck?
MCL: Clearly the incredible talents of the cast and crew of Chuck are the most rewarding aspects of working on Chuck, but the fierce loyalty and love of the fans is clearly the best part.

DI: You seem like a pretty busy guy. How do you like to spend your free time?
MCL: I love to spend my free time relaxing with family and friends.

DI: You’ve got a TV show, have been in tons of movies, and have a successful Hollywood career. How do you stay so grounded?
MCL: I stay grounded with the love of my family and close friends and by the grace of God.

DI: Do you have any other current projects coming up that the fans can look forward to?
MCL: I am looking for fans to support me in my efforts to tour the country and possibly abroad with my comedy shows Shout! and The Rat Pack Of Comedy. I have demand it buttons on my Facebook and Myspace pages fr my fans to demand that I come to their cities. That will guide my tour.

DI: How do you feel about Chuck fans pushing for you to have more screen time with the Twitter hastag, “VivaBigMike”?
MCL: I love that the fans of Chuck want to see me more on the show. It really warms my heart and makes me want to continue to be the best that I can be as a performer.

DI: How can your fans book you for stand-up comedy in their cities?
MCL: The best way is for fans to have me booked in their city is to call their local comedy clubs and request them to book me, but If you are a promoter you should contact me and let’s start the ball rolling. Also, hit my Demand it buttons on my Facebook and Myspace pages so I know where you are.

DI: You will be returning to San Diego Comic-Con 2011, right? I know a lot of fans are looking forward to seeing you there.
MCL: Well, the decision to attend Comic-Con is totally dependent on the show being picked-up for another season. However, I will walk the floor and say hello to fans regardless of what happens.

DI: What do you want to say to all your supporters out there?
MCL: To all of my supporters out there I’d like say say thank you for your love and support. Keep rallying for the show and for me and for me. It really means a lot. I hope you feel my love for you all in my Tweets. God Bless.
