Interview de Julia :
Hollywood The Write Way: Interview: Julia Ling Talks Chuck
Chuck fans will be thrilled to see Anna Wu aka Julia Ling back in the later half of Chuck Season 3. Until then, here's an update straight from Julia herself, as she took some time out on her birthday, yesterday to chat with Hollywood the Write Way.
Spoiler:
Big fan of Chuck, when can we see you appear on the show next?
I just shot an episode a few days ago actually. I believe it is episode 18. Stay tuned! I don't know what else is in store for Anna but I know there are some exciting things coming for the show.
So hopefully that won't be the last of you?
Hopefully not. (laughs) I don't think so.What is your favorite prop piece in Buy More?
I would say the guitar because I love Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Sometimes I swing buy the area where the games are set up and I am always lobbying to have my character have a guitar in her scene. I just love to put that prop over my shoulder.
What is your favorite tech gadget?
Oh gosh, there are so many but I guess my phone because it is my life.
What has been your favorite episode to shoot so far?
I would definitely say Chuck vs. The Break-up, with the Mighty Jocks and there's a fight with the tripod. That was funny.
How much Subway did you eat during the campaign?
I have had so many sandwiches! I got all of my friends to buy subs...I think out of everyone I told and everyone they told, we bought a few hundred sandwiches for that one day campaign when everyone went out and bought Subway. So my friends weren't happy when Anna didn't come back...they were saying, "We bought all of these sandwiches." (laughs)
You have also worked on some other amazing shows including House, Grey's Anatomy, The Deep End, etc... and if you had the chance to appear in any of them again, which would you choose?
I would pick Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Deep End. Timothy Busfield actually directed me on Studio 60 and The Deep End. There were such good people that we worked with and that's also a huge part of why I love my work on Chuck so much because I just love the people that I work with.
You have a producing credit in the film, Cinder but would you be interested in producing an episode of Chuck and can you tell us about working on Cinder?
Yes, if they let me! Though I don't want to talk too much about Cinder because I just wanted to learn and am not ready to discuss that project just yet.
Are you interested in writing and directing aside from acting and producing?
Yes. I'm producing my own thing right now and I am definitely interested in writing and directing. Everywhere I go I see things at a circle angle that I like, you know, so someday if that is a route that life wants to go down, it will happen. Zach (Levi) directed an episode recently (Chuck vs. the Beard).
What have you learned from your experience on Chuck from behind the scenes?
When I wasn't on camera, I would run on over to the video village just because I am a great admirer of one of the producers/directors, Robert McNeill. People who were actors and then turn into directors, they seem to have a deeper understanding of both sides of the camera so I am a great admirer of his work. I am definitely a fan of his and a few others who came in, it was a lot of fun.
What are your upcoming projects?
High School came out at Sundance recently and right now I am just reading scripts as there is so much out there to go after.
What was your experience like at the Sundance Film Festival?
It was so fun! Our movie was in the top 25 at Sundance, so there was a lot of press and excitement. It was my first time in Park City, Utah so I felt like a kid on Christmas Day, opening presents...I was so happy. There was so much snow and I loved it since I was born and raised in LA. It reminded me of a Christmas snow globe. Going through all of the gifting suites and watching the audience feedback, it was a lot of fun. Also, seeing the cast and crew again was great because we shot in Michigan and the last time I saw everyone was about 3 months ago. So it was big party. It was a lot of fun. A few people from Chuck came too so that was great.

Julia Ling vient de montrer une photo prise à l'époque du pilote de "Chuck" :
This ID picture was taken on my very first day of Chuck, before we finished filming the pilot (the very first episode of Chuck). I was there for a wardrobe fitting, had my hair up in a messy clip, and was just bouncing around meeting everyone for the first time, when I was suddenly pulled to the side in streets of downtown LA for my mug shot.
And Anna Wu was born.

Une interview de Julia (qui date déjà du 10 mai), dont les passages sur "Chuck" ont été mis sous balises spoilers :
Julia Ling discusses working on “Buffy” and “Studio 60,” and her appearance on “Chuck” this season”
After debuting in the critically acclaimed “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” actress Julia Ling went on to star in several prominent series including “ER,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” “House,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “The O.C.” Not only is she a talented actress, but Ling is also a highly skilled martial artist. Most recently, Ling is best known for her series regular role in the first two seasons of “Chuck” as the spunky nerd-herder Anna Wu. After leaving the series in the second season, Ling is set to make a guest appearance on “Chuck” on the May 10th episode.
Quite recently, Julia took the time out of her busy shooting schedule to talk with MediaBlvd about some of the iconic figures she’s worked with, how “Chuck” has changed her life, and she slips some tantalizing hints towards what might happen on her return to the series…
MediaBlvd> How and when did you get started in acting?
Julia> I’ve always been really artsy since I was like three years old. I did dancing, singing, played the piano, painting and acting, and stuff like that. When I was in high school, I studied with Mae Welter who put together the showcase for acting, and from that showcase, there were several agencies in the audience who offered to sign with me right after they watched me perform. So, that’s kind of how I got started.
MediaBlvd> That’s pretty cool! Do you have a role that you would consider to be your favorite?
Julia> It would definitely be Anna Wu from “Chuck.” She kicks ass! She wears wild makeup, you know, short skirts and lots of bling – just so much fun to wear! But I can’t really wear all that around town without consequences [laughs], so I get away with it on the show!
MediaBlvd> Now is there someone you would consider to be a role model in the industry? If so, tell us about it…
Julia> Aaron Sorkin, because he’s funny, he’s smart, he’s brilliant, he’s tough but he’s also kind...and handsome. [laughs] Also he’s very hard-working. When I worked on “Studio 60” with him, he was such an incredible leader. He know his stuff and he was very collaborative – he just took care of his people, and he continues to produce the most amazing things.
There’s this other guy, Justin Lin, whom I was first introduced to in the film “Better Luck Tomorrow.” And despite all the overwhelming obstacles, the Asian stereotypes, he continues to produce the most creatively powerful films, and he has his own unique style, so I’d love to work with him someday. And I was really into speed and cars and stuff at the time, so [laughs] I became a fan of his movie “Fast & Furious” – another movie that he directed.
MediaBlvd> Interesting. Now that sort of leads me to my next question about you starring in “Studio 60 and the Sunset Strip,” a terrific show which was so underrated and ended way too quickly. What was it like working on that – an Aaron Sorkin show?
Julia> It was definitely really fast-paced, there was literally hundreds of extras and some really really great guest stars, like John Goodman, Sting – Sting was in an episode, actors were flying in and out like they were on the Tonight Show. So there was a little bit of anxiety, you know, because there’s so much going on and I wanted to do my best. At the same time, it was one of the best moments of my life. If I could be anywhere right now, I would definitely turn back in time and be back on the set of “Studio 60.” I felt really safe on it, because everyone knew what they were doing, the producers always did a superb job, you know, everything’s taken care of. And Aaron Sorkin, his writing is just so brilliant, which makes it so much easier for us actors to perform, because everything in the story makes so much sense – it’s so detailed. It was a lot of fun, and everyone really took care of me, they all knew what they were doing. I just felt very happy on that set.
MediaBlvd> Also, I remember that “Studio 60” was anticipated to be such a big hit, but it was unfortunately cancelled after only one season. Many critics credit its downfall with the rise of “30 Rock,” a series which was also about the behind-the-scenes stories of an SNL-esque show. What’s your opinion on the matter? Do you think “30 Rock” had anything to do with “Studio 60” getting cancelled?
Julia> I don’t know honestly, but I think that the critics kept trying to associate the show with politic and stuff, maybe they were doing just that rather than enjoying the show for entertainment, you know. I think that might have been one of the reasons why it was heavily criticized. But I don’t know, I just think it should have gone on forever! [laughs]
MediaBlvd> Now you were in the series finale of “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” which of course makes you an immediate hero of mine! What can you tell us about working on one of the most critically lauded cult shows of all time (and what I personally consider to be the greatest show of all time)? What were your experiences on that show?
Julia> I was studying chemical engineering at that time, and I would not miss classes for anything, but when “Buffy” [was on], I dropped everything. [laughs] I really wanted to be on set, I love “Buffy,” I love Sci-Fi, I love fighting. It was my first time doing a fight sequence on camera, which unfortunately they didn’t air much of my stuff, because they had a really limited airtime. But in the fight sequence that I did, I fought with a straight-sword, that’s how we fought these uber-vamps. It was fun because you start to recognize the actors and stunt guys by their voices and I didn’t know what they looked like, because they were completely covered up [in layers of makeup] [laughs]. So, at the end of the day, everyone took off their great big uber-vamp masks off, and then I didn’t recognize any of them anymore, and I had worked with them like 16 hours a day! [laughs] I had gotten to know them only by the sound of their voices. The straight-sword is actually one of the biggest inspirations that got me into Wushu and other martial arts. And working with Joss Whedon was just fantastic.Spoiler:
MediaBlvd> Let’s talk “Chuck” for a minute. I, like many avid viewers, were really caught off-guard when you didn’t reprise your role this season. How did you feel about the way the show handled your departure?
Julia> As actors, I feel like we’re always living on edge. We don’t usually know what happens in the next episodes until we get the scripts, so that unknown is part of the thrill of being on a series. I talked to Tony Hale recently, you know his character was killed off at the Buy More, which was just a major shocker. I was just really glad Anna didn’t die [laughs], I really like Anna and really has nothing to do with being the actress who plays her, I’m actually just a big fan of the show and what the writers created for this character, Anna. She’s spunky and fun, she’s tough, and she dresses really sexy. I’ve always been like an uber-geek for my whole life, so I was really happy that “Chuck” came back for its third season, and I’m very happy that Anna just took a hiatus to Hawaii. [laughs]
MediaBlvd> Fortunately, you’re set to make a guest appearance on the May 10th episode of “Chuck,” which is beyond awesome! Is there anything you can divulge about your return to the series? Will this be a one episode guest appearance, or are you officially returning to the series? Or are you not allowed to say either way? [laughs]
Julia> Yes, I’m coming back on May 10th. Anna’s been in Hawaii for awhile, so she’s kind of tanned now [laughs]. So you’re going to see this sexy new side to her…it’s going to be interesting, because Morgan’s all grown up now, so Anna’s going to be in for a really big surprise. Whether or not she sticks around is kind of up in the air.
MediaBlvd> Interesting, interesting. Now what were your thoughts on that fan campaign, heavily supported by Subway, to renew “Chuck” this season? Did you know that the show had such a dedicated fan base?
Julia> Oh my gosh, that was really touching! “Chuck” has the best fans in the world! Sometimes I just can’t believe it’s happening , you know, I’m working in a place where people will lobby for us to continue to have a job! I feel so fortunate to be on such an awesome show, with such wonderful and dedicated fans. I just feel so lucky and so honored! I just wish that there was more [I could say to] thank everybody for their support!
MediaBlvd> Excellent! I think one of the reasons why “Chuck” is such a massive success among it’s viewers is because it’s lighthearted, it doesn’t take itself too seriously! In these rough times, that kind of show sort of has an appeal for everyone…
Julia> Yeah, it’s sweet, it’s really sweet. It’s one of the first shows I’ve watched in a long time where I’m genuinely in love with and care for all of the characters. It’s so sweet.
MediaBlvd> Now this is probably a question you can’t answer, but I have to ask it anyways. [laughs] Obviously, as you’ve mentioned before, you’re very skilled at the martial arts, as is your character, Anna Wu. So very skilled that even John Casey mentioned in a earlier episode that you should be consider for field training… Is there a possibility that you might become an agent and join Morgan again, but both as skilled field operatives this time ?
Julia> [laughs] You know, I like the sound of that! Agent Wu…people who probably tease me and be like “Agent Who?” [laughs] Hmm, Morgan and Anna like the Mr. and Mrs. Smith of the Buy More? [laughs]
MediaBlvd> I like that! [laughs]
Julia> Yes, it’s super geeky! I like it! I don’t know, but I like it!
MediaBlvd> Now do you have any other upcoming projects that you’d like to promote?
Julia> Yeah, we have the Facebook page that we update fairly often - www.facebook.com/lingtime, and ever since I did a USO tour last year, I’ve been dying to fire some shotguns. So I finally tried it last weekend, so we posted that up on YouTube and on my Facebook page [laughs]. Um, I got a couple of movies – there’s one called “High School,” starring Adrian Brody and Michael Chiklis, and it’s directed by John Stalberg, who co-wrote it with Stephen Susco. I believe that’s coming out later this year… “High School” was actually top 25 at Sundance this year, and it’s a story about a school that gets high – pretty freakin’ hilarious [laughs]. And there’s this other little film called “Dynamite Swine,” which I think will also come out later this year. And, of course, my episode of “Chuck” which is coming out on May 10! I’m actually really excited; I can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks of it.MediaBlvd> I’m sure it’ll be terrific! Now my final question is – what advice would you give to aspiring actors?
Julia> Hmm, depends on what kind of actor you’re talking about. According to Urban Dictionary, an actor is someone who waits tables for a living [laughs]. So if that’s the case, my advice would be to start looking for your favorite restaurant now [laughs]! Um, show business is just like anything else, you have to study and never stop studying, never stop growing in your personal life and your creative life, professionally and morally, spiritually – just always strive to become a better person. That’s, I guess, what I can say [about advice].
MediaBlvd> Excellent advice! Thanks so much for doing this interview, it was really great talking to you!
Julia> Thank you!
