Computer Mishaps Lead To Nerd Telepathy, In Ctrl

Il me faisait trop marrer.

"ASS MAN!!!" Grrrr!!

" I am a Flaing (?) heterosexuel "

Ctrl Z to become webisode series

Ctrl Z to become webisode series
by Peter T. Chattaway
Last week, I mentioned that a filmmaker named Rob Kirbyson is currently directing a family film called Snowmen for Mpower Pictures, the company created a few years ago by Passion of the Christ producer Steve McEveety. I also mentioned that Kirbyson, who happens to be a Christian, had previously directed a number of short films, including Ctrl Z (2007), which features Zachary Levi of the TV show Chuck in a supporting role.
I learned afterwards that Ctrl Z is currently being spun off into a series of webisodes for NBC Universal, under the slightly shorter title Ctrl. Following in the footsteps of last year's Gemini Division, the series will give prominent placement to a commercial product, in this case Nestea Red; in the original short film, a man discovers that he can manipulate reality using his computer keyboard after it has been hit accidentally by a football, but in the series, the man will spill a can of Nestea Red on the keyboard instead.
The series, like the film, is being written and directed by Kirbyson; there is no word yet on how many, if any, of the original cast members will be involved, but presumably Levi, at least, is rather busy with his TV show right now. The Los Angeles Times reports, via its 'Technology' blog, that Ctrl will be distributed this summer "through a variety of channels, including Hulu.com, cable video-on-demand services and a dedicated website."

Taking TV Web 'Ctrl' with Tony Hale
Taking TV Web 'Ctrl' with Tony Hale
by Troy Rogers
After playing one the funniest, most offbeat characters for three seasons as Buster Bluth on Arrested Development, a character that had his hand bitten off by a seal, Tony Hale found a welcome home on NBC's hit Chuck as corporate efficiency expert, Emmet Milbarge. Interestingly it was Chuck star Zachary Levi who teamed up with Tony Hale to star in the 2008 short film, CTRL Z, which captured the award winning attention of the visual folks at Sundance.
After finding Sundance success, NBC took control of the short comedy to spin-off Ctrl as 10-episode web series, starring Tony Hale as Stuart, a typical office worker who spills iced tea on his computer keyboard and suddenly discovers he has the special supernatural ability to "control" the reality of his office by pressing a button combination using the Ctrl key. Now airing on the official NBC page for Ctrl, fans can now watch actors Steve Howey and Emy Coligado become the targets of Tony Hale who can rewind time, move objects, become invisible and read people's minds all with the click of button.
This week we caught up to Tony Hale to learn more about Ctrl, how his sense of comedic style has changed since Arrested Development, and what he feels a web series like Ctrl needs to find success as compared to a typical network television series.
THE DEADBOLT: How has your comedic style and sense of timing changed since Arrested Development?
[Tony Hale Ctrl] TONY HALE: I don't know. I mean, that's a great question. My comedic style changing - I mean, it's really mainly the way I look at it is each character kind of brings their own obvious sensibilities. Like I'm doing this movie right now here in New York called, Happy Thank You More Please and the character is a very kind of lovable loser and really really likes this girl and wants to date her, and all of this kind of stuff, and he's got his own quirkiness. But it comes from more of a realistic base and he just kind of says stupid things. I mean, he's just really kind of a sweet spirit and he kind of has his funny tones. And then you look at the character I play on Chuck, Emmett, and he's just kind of evil and conniving and he's got his tones. Then Buster was pretty much - You know, there was a lot of mental illness going on there. He was pretty much a manchild, so he had his kind of tones. So it's really just how it's created and you just kind of bring your own stuff into that.
THE DEADBOLT: What do you think CTRL needs to succeed as compared to a network TV series?
HALE: Well, the only thing I guess I can say about that is what I believe in it and what I love about the web series CTRL, is I love that aspect that it's just kind of an every day experience being in an office and all of a sudden the supernatural comes into that. I think that's really something that everybody can, everybody wants. Like Woody Allen actually does this a lot in his movies and it's kind of called magical realism where he has just kind of an everyday experience and all of a sudden something magical or supernatural will come into it, and I love that. I think everybody kind of wants that at some point in their life. So I would think that would be kind of a lasting factor, because it's just fun to watch. Even the Battlestar Galactica, I love that show, but that's totally sci-fi, totally out there, totally supernatural. But this is just an office environment and something crazy happens like the magic keyboard and that's something that everybody can kind of resonate with.
Other Conference Call Highlights:
Tony Hale on what draws him to play such awkward characters:
"Probably because I'm socially awkward. What draws me to playing socially awkward characters? I think they're interesting. I'm sure I've got my own social awkwardness, but I'm kind of fascinated by that and I can probably attribute it to - I lived in New York for a long time and rode the subway and saw a lot of awkwardness. But they're just interesting. They're not cookie cutter, they're usually very colorful characters. They see things different ways and I don't know, I just kind of like them and they're interesting to me. It's also what I get cast in, so I'll take the booking."
Hale on how his character, Stuart will evolve throughout the CTRL series:
"How he evolves is - it's cool because I mentioned before that I did this short film, CRTL Z and that was just focusing on one key and the series goes to a lot of different keys. Like he copy - pastes himself, he becomes bold, I think in the third episode he does that, and he uses the delete key and he kind of discovers all of these new things. But what I love it is what he sees. You know, many times when we think about, like the control aspect that he has kind of becomes an addiction. The control becomes an addiction to him and what he sees is kind of a perfect thing and if I could undo this ... Like there's that one time in the third episode when he kisses Emy's character. You know he wants to recreate that first kiss, but that's a spontaneous moment of love and what he thinks he can create he can't. He can't get back to that and we think we can control that and we can't, because when it started it was all about her. But then when he tried to redo it, it became all about him. So he kind of sees how things can get perverted with that control and it can kind of become an addiction."
Tony Hale on the status of the Arrested Development movie:
"I think right now - I mean, supposedly the script is being written, I haven't really heard. But pretty much everybody wants to do it, it's just a matter of getting everybody's schedule together and everybody is kind of doing their own thing, because you got about eleven people that you got to kind of get everybody's schedule coordinated. So I think that's kind of a feat. But we're definitely all on board and the script is supposedly in the works, so we all want it to happen. So we'll see hopefully. I want to wear Buster's hand again. I want to wear the hook again."
